ANDREAS SCHMITTEN
Andreas Schmitten is known for his space-consuming, highly complex installations, in which figures, objects and interiors are staged to create fantastic, surreal worlds. In a synthesis of aesthetics, complex content and material allure, he combines archetypal (art) symbols in completely new ways and ironizes them. Perfectly lacquered surfaces, a strangely pale color palette as well as mannered elegant forms characterize his technically perfect works, the spaces often transformed into unreal, dreamlike realms. In this, he uses a stylistic idiom that recalls works from the past and applies it to seemingly profane everyday objects. Through artificial alienation of familiar forms, his sculptures and installations radiate an unusual allure that is reinforced by the use of cool materials and surfaces. Andreas Schmitten distinguishes himself by the multi-faceted ways he uses forms as well as hidden humor, and his ability to transfer classic forms into a new, contemporary visual language. Last, but not least, his graphic works are separate from his sculptures leading to formally and thematically distinct groups of works.
